Games to Make You Feel Dumb: Wordscapes Edition
I’m probably a little late to the game when it comes to Wordscapes. For those who are as far behind the times as me when it comes to the landscape of mobile gaming, Wordscapes is a mobile game that’s sort of a combination between crossword and word jumble. It does kind of seem like a game that was discovered by a lot of people who don’t really play games. My best friends/business partner, Matt, told me about it. He hasn’t picked up a video game controller since we were roommates back in 2006. I think the argument if further strengthened by the fact that 100% of people who make comments about playing Wordscapes when they’re over-the-shoulder creeping my phone screen, don’t strike me as the video game crowd. Also, cut it out, weirdos.
It’s not so much that the game makes you feel dumb all the time. It’s really more of an impossible roller coaster that has hills higher than the previous and deep dark pits where you may wonder if the cars were just swallowed whole by the earth. You just stare at the maw, waiting for the word you were supposed to spell to cover the hole, sealing you and your stupidity there forever.
Just how dark can it get? Well, I just tried to enter “TEATOP” as the last word in a puzzle because that’s a fucking thing you idiot. So that’s where I’m at. Honestly, with the way this game goes sometimes, I’m surprised I didn’t also try “POTTEA,” “TOPTEA” (sounds fancy!) before landing on the correct answer.
